Out of the 11 students who qualified for nationals, seven of them went to Anaheim, California to compete against other DECA students from around the world.
Two Northwood teams won Platinum Seal Awards: Stephanie Thompson and Gaby Mehringer in the Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making Event, and Alex Waddell and Diane Thompson in the Sports and Entertainment Promotion Plan.
Senior Brandon Edwards went to the conference and competed with his partners, senior Jesse Mathias and senior Danielle Van der Lelie.
“It was fun. We didn’t quite place where we wanted to, but it was a great learning experience. I learned a lot of interview tips, and got to meet with some heads of businesses,” Edwards said.
Edwards went to the international conference in previous years.
“We went out last year as well, and it’s always good to make connections with people outside of North Carolina. We did a little better last year, but this year I definitely had more fun,” Edwards said.
During the state competition, the following students were recognized as Series Winners in their events and qualified to go to the international conference: Alex Waddell won first place in automotive services marketing; Diane Thompson and Alex Waddell took second place in sports & entertainment promotion plan; Jacob Friedman took fourth place food marketing services; Jesse Mathias, Brandon Edwards and Danielle Van der Lelie took fourth place for sports & entertainment promotion plan; and James Calhoun and Jacob Friedman took fifth place advertising campaign event
DECA Advisor Kim Hall has seen increase in participation in the program in the past two years.
“The marketing education program and DECA are growing. [New marketing teacher Ashley] Clark is doing a great job here, and the students really love her,” Hall said. “I hope that kids continue to sign up and participate because it’s a great opportunity, and I think if you ask the student who have participated, they’ll share that with you as well.”
