Junior Alex Council won the State Championship for the 100-meter run Feb. 7 with a time of 7.23 at the JDL Fast Track, in Winston Salem. Council improved her time by .02 from the preliminaries to the final heat.
“I tell myself mind over body and keep pushing,” Council said.
She has been running since she was eight years old and has placed in every competition in which she has competed.
In addition to the 100-meter, Council runs the indoor 55 long jump and both the 200-meter and 100-meter outdoor relays. Council runs track for Northwood, coached by Richard McDonald.
“She’s teachable and has good reaction time and, in spite of the fact that she’s very quiet, she’s very competitive, and she’s able to handle the nervousness,” McDonald said. “Those are part of the things that makes her successful, being able to overcome your fears, nervousness and anxiousness.”
She is strongly supported by her father, who holds the second fastest time in the world for the 200-meter. Both her parents were Olympic runners. Council competes both statewide and nationally and plans to run in college under a track scholarship.
“I think I have a shot [at the Olympics], not now, but I think I can get down to the time necessary,” said Council, when asked about future running plans after college.
