Four Northwood Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members received awards at the Triad Regional Competitive Events on Saturday, Dec. 13. Junior Marisa Stephenson, senior Cameron Burnette, junior Scott Mitchell and junior Mari Guerrero participated in the competition.
Stephenson received first place in Public Speaking II, Burnette held first place in the first round of Job Interview and fourth in the second round, Mitchell won first place in T-shirt design and Guerrero placed first in Business Procedure.
Students arrived at Northwood at 7 a.m. on Saturday to take the bus to C.W. Stanford Middle School, where the competition was held.
“When we got there they gave us food, then, at 9:30, I had to go to the holding room for my competition, which was job interview,” Burnette said. “I was the fifth one to go; it was horrible.”
Some of the FBLA competitions have multiple rounds, which can be a daunting experience to some students.
“I was actually the first one in my room for the first round, so round two went around after lunch,” Burnette said. “They announced it during lunch, and I got to go back in to do another interview. I was the last person to go and then we had to wait an hour to find out who won. I got fourth place out of twelve…The interview was kind of intimidating.”
The next round of FBLA competitions, the state level, will be held in April, and around 16 students will be competing.
