This week WRAL’s Tom Suiter presented senior Jared Worley with the Extra Effort award. This award is presented to high school students who are academically and athletically gifted. Worley was nominated by football coach Bill Hall.
“I nominated Worley for his leadership, his hard work, extracurricular and his GPA,” Hall said. “I think Jared Worley is a top-notch kid.”
Worley is a two-sport star at Northwood who is trying to decide between a few colleges, notably Davidson and Bentley College of Massachusetts.
“I am looking at these colleges not only because of football but because they are academic schools,” Worley said.
Worley found out last week that he had received the award, but says he did not think too much of it.
“I am not very big on personal achievements. I am more focused on team success, but it is nice to be recognized for both my athletics and academics,” Worley said.
While Worley likes the award, he was more proud of the respect that he had gained from Hall, who nominated him.
“It was a very big deal for me for the coaches to recognize my hard work and effort,” Worley said.
Worley’s interview will air tonight at 6 p.m. on WRAL.
“[On seeing himself on T.V.] I am a little nervous, but it is very new and exciting,” he said.
