“In the beginning, you felt like because she’s a girl, you didn’t want to hit her as hard. But now we know she’s stronger than [we realize],” freshman lacrosse player Gabe Higgins said.
Back in January, The Omniscient reported on junior Morgan Sowards for joining the boy’s lacrosse team. After two months into the season, Sowards has become “one of the team” and a tough teammate.
“We’re both middies. It was hard at first because she didn’t really know the guys game, but as it’s gone on, she’s gotten tougher,” Higgins said.
The toughest part for Sowards is managing academics with lacrosse.
“[Some challenges have been] juggling school and lacrosse. Lacrosse is so time consuming and I’m tired from having practice. It’s been hard to juggle both,” Sowards said.
Sowards has a separate changing area but that is the only difference between her and the other teammates. Sowards is treated like an equal and has not experienced any gender bias from the team.
“She’s been a great contribution and she’s giving a lot of effort,” freshman lacrosse player Josh Thompson said.
