New social studies teacher Adam Lutterloh has many positive things to say about Northwood.
“I was looking for a school that had a good community where the parents and the teachers were on the same page,” Lutterloh said. “I’ve taught in school districts where that’s not always the case.”
Before coming to Northwood, Lutterloh recently taught at Holly Springs High School in Holly Springs, N.C. and Washington High School in Washington, N.C., where he was not able to create a great connection with the students.
“My last school was really big, and it was a great school, but the quantity of students made it harder to manage,” Lutterloh said.
Lutterloh has many hobbies and interests outside of school.
“I’m getting married [soon],” Lutterloh said. “I’m a huge sports fan; I love professional sports. A lot of people around here like college sports more, but I’m more of a professional guy. The Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte Hornets are my two favorites. I’m also an avid reader, and I love to grill and travel.”
Lutterloh hopes to teach his students that they can all make a difference in the world.
“My main goal is to emphasize to the students how they interact with one another and the government and how the people around them matter, that you can have a positive impact,” Lutterloh said. “You might seem like you’re a tiny fish in a huge ocean, but you can still matter. Every student has strengths, and we’re just trying to find out what that strength is.”
Lutterloh said watching his students work together is one of his favorite parts of teaching.
“I think it’s really fun when students collaborate and make things and exceed their expectations, when they put it all together and it makes something that’s really fun,” Lutterloh said. “Sometimes students really push the envelope and go above and beyond, and that’s a lot of fun.”
He then added, “Least favorite: waking up early.”
