Spicy Nine is a popular restaurant located on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. It features authentic Japanese cuisine, a modern bar and yummy BOGO sushi plates. The first time I went was around a year ago in the fall on a date with some of my best friends. The place was filled with a lot of energy, music and people. I instantly fell in love with the large fish tank located in the back and requested to sit just a few feet away. Even though I really enjoy the fish and their vivid colors, I’ve learned from multiple visits that my favorite location to sit is in front of the windows. You can watch all of the lively activity on Franklin Street, and it’s fascinating to see so many unique people walk through. Inside the restaurant, you can meet plenty of new people.
The building has a lot of floor space and many tables but no booths. You are able to make reservations, which is pretty awesome if you have a full party wanting to go out to eat. The lighting is dim, but the action is lively. It’s actually quite loud in the restaurant, so you’re never bored even if you’re dining alone.
The music is always very well selected, typically consisting of “top 40” radio hits or just generally popular songs. It definitely shapes the mood of the place, bringing an uplifting spirit and vibe. The aesthetic is pleasing as well. The bar is very decorative, displaying bright, colorful lights around all of the alcoholic bottles. Behind the bar is where the sushi is prepared. Several chefs are cooped up beside each other, and you can see the sushi being prepared through the clear glass while sitting at a bar stool.
I’ve tried most of their sushi off of the BOGO list, but my favorite for sure has been the “Surf’s Up” roll, consisting of thinly sliced lemon on top, crab, cucumber and avocado. My second favorite is the “Flamingo” roll, coated with kiwi and blackberry sauce, mango, spicy crab and avocado. The sushi is displayed very elegantly on white plates. This is accompanied with chopsticks and soy sauce. However, my favorite food on the menu is the “mango with sticky rice” dessert. I ordered it for the first time on my birthday, and it was super sweet and tangy. Because of its large size, I was able to share it with one other person.
I have enjoyed every visit that I have had to Spicy Nine. I’m thankful to have discovered the sushi place. I’ve created many memories there, and I’ll continue to recommend a variety of people.
