Social studies, health and gym teacher Cameron Vernon was named co-athletic director at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year. Along with Jason Amy, Northwood’s longstanding athletic director, Vernon will now assist with coordinating all athletic related activities, including events like Friday football games, coaches meetings, student physical forms, and coaches’ bus drivers licenses.
“I think Coach Amy did a really good job considering the entire workload it was for one person, but I’ll be honest; I don’t know how he did it by himself for all of these years,” Vernon said. “We have things split up now, so the department doesn’t have to rely on one person to coordinate everything.”
Compared to other schools in the Big 8 3A conference (Northwood’s athletic division), Northwood is “behind the game” in having multiple athletic directors.
“[Those schools] have paid assistance because of the size of their schools, but our district has yet to make that change here at Northwood,” Vernon said. “We have over 1,300 kids, and we have more athletes than some schools in our district have students. I am excited; this is something I’ve wanted to do and have a passion for, and I hope that I can be a huge asset for the coaches and teams at Northwood.”
