As the month of May has crept up on us, spring sports have come to an end. Playoffs have also come, and almost gone, with softball keeping Northwood in the running for a state title.
The softball team continues to stay on the scoreboards after winning Saturday’s second round of playoffs against J.F. Webb May 14 by a close score of 4-3. Varsity softball is now ranked 30th in North Carolina and has a conference record of 10-2.
“As a senior, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to play with for the past four years,” senior McKenzie Allgood said. “We’ve been playing together since the beginning. They’re more than my teammates; they’re my family. It’s going to be weird not stepping back on the field with them again.”
The lacrosse team lost to Chapel Hill High May 7 in the first round of playoffs. However, this year’s season was by far one of the most improved seasons within the lacrosse program, allowing them to continue playing.
“This was the best season our program has ever had with 11 wins and 6 losses, beating the 2014 season [record] of 8 wins and 8 losses, which is a testament of continual growth and eventually being able to compete in state,” lacrosse coach Kevin McDaniel said.
The baseball team lost to Rockingham High in their second-round playoff game 7-1 May 14. Despite the last play being a fly-out, caught by a dive, it didn’t bring the team down.
“This season has been phenomenal; we ended up being the third winningest team for Northwood baseball,” junior Matt Oldham said. “It will for sure be a team that I’ll miss playing with.”
The girls’ soccer team also finished their season May 14 after losing a second-round playoff game against Rockingham High. Senior Paige Marro lead the team through a strong season being a captain and the top scorer.
“It was a great season, and we improved our conference and state standings,” junior Ariel Glosson said. “Not only did we grow technically; our character improved, and we grew as a team.”
The end of the school year has arrived, and with that comes the end of all spring sports. According to the athletes, this year consisted of successful seasons and enjoyable memories throughout each team.
