The football team defeated rival Jordan-Matthews (JM) 47-0 Monday at Northwood, bringing the Charger’s overall record to 1-2.
The Chargers were led by the defense, who shut the Jets out while holding them to eight total yards and forcing three turnovers.
Help also came from junior quarterback Alex Parker, who threw for over 200 yards and five touchdowns.
“I was pretty happy with [my performance], throwing five touchdowns,” Parker said. “But if my line didn’t block and my receivers didn’t catch, it wouldn’t have mattered.”
Because this was the Chargers’ first home game, expectations for a win against the Jets were high, and winning against a rival made it more important, according to senior Wesley Roberson.
“A shutout feels great no matter who it’s against, but it being against JM makes it that much better,” Roberson said.
The scoring came early and often, with sophomore Josh Scott catching the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter. The Chargers put up 19 points in quarter one, with additional touchdowns by junior Tyrell Baldwin and senior Demuntay Thomas.
In the second quarter, the Chargers scored 21 points with Roberson catching his first varsity touchdown pass. The Charger defense also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. At the half, the Chargers led by 40 points.
The scoring slowed down in the second half, with Baldwin scoring the Chargers’ last touchdown in the third quarter. Roberson, who had one touchdown on the day, thought the Chargers played well together.
“I feel like as a whole we played really well,” Roberson said. “And we capitalized on the mistakes JM made.”
Baldwin thought the coaches did a good job formulating a game plan for the Monday night event.
“We were very well prepared for the game,” Baldwin said. “We worked our plays to perfection and our defense did well.”
The Chargers’ next game is against Carrboro High School at home Friday at 7 p.m.
