The Philadelphia Eagles upset the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII last Sunday.
Backup quarterback Nick Foles won the Super Bowl MVP award after a performance in which he threw for 373 yards, three touchdowns and had a receiving touchdown. Other stand out performers included undrafted rookie Corey Clement, who finished with four receptions for 100 yards, and defensive end Brandon Graham, who made a strip sack on Tom Brady in the fourth quarter.
Despite the loss, the Patriots stayed competitive throughout the game. Regular season MVP quarterback Tom Brady accumulated 28 completions for 505 yards, a Super Bowl record, and three touchdowns. His number one receiver, tight end Rob Gronkowski, totaled nine receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
As expected, Super Bowl Sunday was a day of great joy as well as devastation. Some disappointed Patriots fans attributed much of the loss to the officiating.
“There were three touchdowns that were very, very controversial,” junior Sean Foye said.
Many Eagles fans and avid anti-Patriots fans had the general attitude of Zachary Gross.
“I feel like the outcome was fair,” Gross said. “The Patriots don’t deserve to win.”
Regardless of winning or losing, many sports fans could agree that this year’s Super Bowl was an exciting one.
“My definition of a good game is not somebody blowing somebody out,” junior Joshua Scott said. “[The point is] enjoying it all the way through, and that’s what they did.”
Baseball coach Rick Parks, who is known for his support of Tom Brady and the Patriots, agreed.
“It was an exciting game,” Parks said. “I thought both teams played very well offensively.”
For the rest of the 103.4 million who watched the Super Bowl this year, Sunday was just a fun day of eating nachos, watching funny commercials and hanging out with friends.
“It’s a community thing—it’s having fun,” junior Chris Medina said.
