What is the hype all about regarding the famous chicken sandwich? The release of the sandwich was announced on August 3rd and since then, Popeyes has been having to make more and more sandwiches considering the sandwich was released for a limited time and due to its popular demand. Northwood students have different opinions on the Popeyes chicken Sandwich, but it’s safe to say that most would not have guessed that it could have led to a man’s death.
“I don’t eat Popeyes,” junior Terry Moore said. “I have, however, heard of the hype behind it, though. I haven’t heard of the stabbing but that sounds brutal.”
“I haven’t eaten at Popeyes…[but] I had heard about the man who was stabbed over a sandwich,” freshman Tonya Irey said. “To be honest, I can’t believe something like that would happen. Like, really– over a sandwich!”
Kevin Tyrell Davis, 28, was stabbed and killed over a Popeyes chicken sandwich in Oxon Hill, Maryland after allegedly cutting in the line in the restaurant after the re-release of the popular Popeyes Chicken Sandwich.
The Prince George County Police Department said that surveillance footage shows Davis was stabbed outside of the restaurant at around 7 p.m. Davis was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police Chief Hank Stawinski told reporters on Tuesday that surveillance footage showed that several people were in line at the restaurant who were there specifically to purchase the chicken sandwich when Davis entered the store and methodically started cutting the line. Another man confronted Davis about his conduct, and fifteen seconds later, the two went out the restaurant door and Davis was stabbed.
“How does a confrontation lead to a homicide in fifteen seconds?” Stawinski said.
The Chief of Police called the stabbing a “pointless crime.” Families and children were in the restaurant during that time. Police are looking for the suspect, who authorities believe left in a vehicle. They have also recovered a knife from the scene.
In recent weeks, Popeyes’ social media promotions of the sandwich have slowed dramatically. In a statement, Popeyes said the company was saddened by the stabbing. Stwanski said police have no information suggesting that the stabbing could have been a long-standing dispute Authorities believe the suspect and the victim didn’t know each other. They also released a photo of the suspect and a woman who was with him when he fled. Police hope to find the woman and talk to her about the incident. Until then the search for the Popeyes stabber continues.
