In Sept. 1620, the Pilgrims, a group of people from England, arrived in America in what we know today as Plymouth, Massachusetts. After receiving help in the new world from the American Indians and acquiring a successful harvest a year after their arrival, it is believed that the Pilgrims held a feast jointly with a local tribe. This celebration between the Pilgrims and the local Wampanoag tribe would become known as the first Thanksgiving, a national holiday that would continue to be observed throughout American history.
North Carolina had a general election on November 3, 2020, with early voting options and mail-in voting. The Chatham County Board of County Commissioners is a group of five members elected for four-year, staggered terms. They work closely with departments whose directors are selected by state boards, like the Board of Elections or university officials. They also have a voice in determining important policies affecting our daily lives, including land use planning, recreation, utilities, building inspections and permits, waste disposal and recycling, libraries, tourism and emergency response. The Board of Health and the Economic Development Corporation, and the Board of Social Services members are appointed by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. They also help with funding education at the K-12 and community college levels.
Juniors and seniors have always felt pressure when searching for their perfect college. To view the individual features each campus has to offer, many students typically choose to go on tours of the school. This year many colleges have taken away the opportunity to participate in physical campus tours due to the pandemic. While picking colleges may be more difficult this year, tours don’t have to be with an official guide on campus.
Politicians can often be seen as untouchable; separate from ordinary citizens. Even the most down-to-earth are still either heralded by their supporters or mocked by their detractors; it’s easy to forget that many of them, even the millionaire campaigners, are real people with lives outside of politics.
