On Oct. 22, Michael Jordan announced on Twitter that he had formed a new NASCAR racing team, 23XI Racing, alongside Denny Hamlin with Bubba Wallace as their driver.
The Omniscient recently sent a survey out to the students at Northwood to get their opinions on the 2020 ballot. Although Northwood’s student population exceeds 1,400, the fifty two students who took the time to respond to our questions had a lot to say!
Because Northwood students are completing their schoolwork at home this semester, students are on their computers a good portion of the day. When school was in person, computers were often only used a fraction of the time spent in each class. Now, students must use their laptop to access all of their learning. They’re also often up late submitting assignments. Finishing assignments at night subjects students to copious amounts of blue light from their devices’ screens. Many students also are on other electronic devices at night. Large amounts of exposure to blue light have been found to have negative effects on teenagers’ health.

Traditionally, elections in The United States have been manned by the elderly. However, due to the Coronavirus, many seniors are choosing not to work at the polls in order to protect themselves from the virus. Now, many are looking to young people to make up for the shortages. Power the Polls, an organization dedicated to recruiting people to work at the polls, had secured many high-profile endorsements, from the likes of Trevor Noah and Lebron James, to companies like Old Navy and Target. Across the country, young people are stepping up to try and fill the gap. Even students from Northwood are participating.

Co-Editor in Chief Ella Sullivan breaks down all the candidates running in the 2020 Board of Commissioners elections. Three out of five seats are up for re-election this year. Chatham County residents can vote on all districts; however, only Districts One, Two and Five are up for election this cycle. District Three’s Diana Hales and District Four’s James G. “Jim” Crawford will remain on the board.
When students at Northwood aren’t busy completing assignments, many are practicing their favorite sports. Sports at Northwood include football, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball, swim, track and field, cross country, lacrosse and wrestling. Sports are an important activity for students because they offer health benefits, teamwork skills and a distraction from everyday stressors.
