Northwood Girls Golf Team Wins Big 8 Championship, Jordan Named Player of the Year

On Monday, April 26, the Northwood Girls Golf Team traveled to Durham for the Big 8 Championship. Northwood’s team won the tournament and two other accolades.

“The final match at Hillandale was for “all the marbles” as [Head] Coach [Jason] Amy would say,” sophomore Lillian Jordan said.

Northwood, East Chapel Hill, Durham School of the Arts, Carrrboro, Chapel Hill and Orange all competed in the Big 8 Championship. Northwood won the tournament with 294 points.

The Big 8 Championship hosted an 18-hole course instead of the standard nine-hole layout.

“Playing 18 holes instead of our usual nine definitely wore me out, so I didn’t play as well on the back nine, but am still proud of my game regardless,” senior Mia Bone said.

Northwood’s team is relatively young with some players who only started playing this year.

“Ending the season by winning the Big 8 Championship truly shows the amount of work and dedication every member of the team put into the season,” Jordan said. “Our team has some people who have been playing for less than a year, and they are already some of the top players in the conference. For me, it is very rewarding knowing that hours throughout the day and practice contributed to something we could bring back to Northwood.”

Jordan was named Big 8 Golfer of the Year.

“Since the end of last season, being the Big 8 Player of the Year has been a goal of mine,” Jordan says. “I wanted to win it not just for myself, but for the school as well. The Player of the Year award was in the back of my mind throughout the season this year, but when it came down to the last match of the season, it really wasn’t the title of the award that mattered to me; it was the fact my score improved between seasons.”

Jordan added that, “without the support from Coach Amy, winning this award wouldn’t have been possible. Throughout the stress of virtual and in-person learning, Coach Amy has made time to work with everyone on the team and be a person we can all talk to whether it be about school or things in our life.”

Amy was named Big 8 Coach of the Year after leading his team to the championships.

“Our season was filled with a lot of success with Lily Jordan as the Conference Player of the year for conference,” Coach Amy said. “I expect Lindsey Vickers and Amelia Spell to join Lily at Regionals next week to compete and hopefully do well enough to make it to the State Championships as a team. The Covid -19 precautions were part of the daily process of checking in and honestly not a factor while golfing.  The girls did a fabulous job following protocols. We look forward to Kayleigh Romel and Alexis Stumpf also coming back next year to create another championship team!”
