Student Athletes Share Spring Sports Experiences

Northwood High School offers a variety of spring sports, including tennis, soccer, softball, track, and lacrosse. The Omniscient interviewed students from some of these teams to see how their seasons are going so far.

SOFTBALL:

One anonymous softball player said she was inspired to play the game when she found an old glove in her garage at home. Even though she has just started playing, she says that the practices aren’t that hard, but that she is sometimes confused by the rules of the game, such as what the different plays are. In terms of her teammates, she said “they’re all really nice.”

BOYS’ SOCCER:

Freshman Brooks Bae joined the track team to improve his soccer performance.

“This is my first year playing. the practices have been very difficult but I can already feel some improvement,” Bae said.

Bae says he’s one of the slower runners, but the team has nevertheless given him their full support.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

An anonymous member of this year’s girls’ soccer team says she’s new to Northwood’s team, but has been playing the game for a long time.

“Practices are good, and the coaches are very good and super kind,” she said.

The student says that while there was some tension amongst teammates at the beginning of the season, the team hit its stride on the field and the girls are getting along better than they used to.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Sophomore Ricardo Perez says says he’s been playing tennis since seventh grade.

“I’m playing tennis because my mom forced me to,” sophomore Ricardo Perez said. “When I first started [at Northwood] there wasn’t the mental strain of being a new member, and I got along with my teammates pretty well.”

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Senior Erin Lippers decided to play lacrosse so she could stay active after the tennis season.

“This is my first year playing… I feel ok during practices, but I have a lot of room for improvement,” Lippers said.

While she has enjoyed her experience overall, she says that games can be pretty stressful. Nevertheless, she says she’s “ getting along great with [her] teammates,” that she “already knew a lot of the players” and that “they are all very welcoming.”

These student-athletes, whether they are new to the sport or have multiple seasons under their belt, are showing their dedication to their sport through their commitment to practicing and improving their skills.
