Beginning Fall 2021, Northwood’s FFA Chapter began growing plants for their 1st Annual Spring Plant Sale April 30. Chapter advisors Laura Smith and Lindsay Davis encourage visitors to attend between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Northwood High School greenhouse. Parking is available beside the tennis courts and behind the school.
Garden plants, bedding plants, herbs, hanging baskets, succulents and mixed containers are available. Students enrolled in horticulture classes at Northwood have grown the plants since they were purchased.
“We purchased the plants wholesale as ‘plugs,’ which are small plants that have just been started,” Smith said. “Our students transplanted them and have raised them to a now marketable size and will sell them as retail.”
Money raised from the plant sale will go towards supporting the efforts of students in the program, such as for travel and registration fees for state and national conventions, state and national leadership conferences, and career development events; all of these are essential parts of Northwood’s FFA Chapter.
“This plant sale not only supports our program financially, but teaches our horticulture students about the production side of running a greenhouse, as well as financial planning for the sale,” Smith said. “This is an event we plan to make annual and hope it will grow each year. We are really hoping to have large community involvement.”
Prices for the plants range from $1-$22, depending on size, species and maintenance required for adequate care. Northwood FFA is currently caring for the plants in their greenhouse, where they will be stored until the plant sale takes place.
