During the month of March, Northwood’s Junior Student Council is holding a door decorating contest that is open to all students and teachers.
The door decorating contest is part of executing the Student Council’s 2022-2023 theme for Northwood.
“So student council’s 2022-2023 theme for the year is Power Up, and the door decoration contest is a good way to power up our school spirit and student body involvement in school activities,” Junior Student Council President Morgan Turner said.
Inspiration for this event came from the Halloween practice of decorating people’s doors in traditional Halloween symbols, also known as “booing” people.
“We [Junior Student Council] had the idea when in October we were discussing booing people, and we thought it would be more fun if instead of us just decorating the doors, everyone could participate in decorating the doors,” Turner said.
Although this is not an annual event, door decorating contests are not an uncommon occurrence at Northwood.
“We used to do quite a few door decorating contests in years past, and the students get excited. They like planning the door decorations and helping out with that and it’s been a little while since we had one, so we’re excited and looking forward to it,” health science teacher Julie Fogle said.
In the past, door decorating contests were held for different occasions throughout the school year.
“It [door decorating contests] varied throughout the school year, but they were held during a seasonal or a special time of the year. It might have been for something like CTE month,” Mrs. Fogle said.
For this year’s contest, there are three themes that students and teachers should keep in mind when decorating their doors.
“So the themes are ‘Power Up’ which is student council’s 2022-2023 theme, ‘Spring Fever’ because it is about to be spring and then ‘The Future is Bright’ because as people graduate they go off to college, and they’ve got a lot to look forward to,” Turner said.
Teachers and students are already excited about this pre-spring competition and making their game plans.
“We [the nursing class] do have ideas. We’ve got our door planned, we’re going with the spring theme and it’s also going to kind of tie in with one of the school themes that we have…we’re gathering our supplies and getting ready,” Mrs. Fogle said.
There are hopes that this competition will be continued next school year and in the years following.
“I do hope this competition continues in the future. I think it’s a nice chance for students to come up with an idea and to collaborate with each other,” said Mrs. Fogle.
Doors should be finished by March 31. The judging will be done on Monday, April 3, and the winners will be announced later that day. The winners of the door decorating contest will receive a prize consisting of donuts and drinks like juice and soda. Since teachers can enter different class periods into the contest the prize will be distributed when the teacher wants it to be.
