Students Sing, Shine in SIX! The Musical

BY GWYN WILLIAMS

This spring, the Northwood Arts Department is putting on SIX! The Musical. As the hit Broadway production works with a small cast, and with a new director at the head of the theatre department, different perspectives are bound to arise.

“You get to work a lot more one-on-one with less people,” said Elsa Sandvik, who is playing Kathrine Howard.  “It’s really nice to be able to focus on actually acting, and you don’t have to worry about what other people are doing.”

Sandvik, a Northwood sophomore, was also in last year’s production of Freaky Friday, so Sandvik had first-hand experience with the change in director dynamics this school year.

“Working with a new director is really nice,” Sandvik said. “With so many different people all the time, it’s a great experience to adjust to doing different shows.” The cast and crew have demonstrated immense commitment to the production, which can be seen through meticulous dress rehearsals, vocal and music practices, costume and set design sessions, and more.

“[Working with a smaller cast] is much more chill,” said Amari Bullet, who plays Katherine of Aragon. “You’re able to get closer with your castmates. It’s a lot easier to get through things.” Both Sanvik and Bullet are excited about the show and seeing the approach new director Kylee McCormack takes for the Theatre Department.

“I think that having a new director has brought a lot of new ideas to the table, there’s never a dull moment and everyone gets their opinions heard,” Bullet said, “You take everything and put it together. You have to sing, dance, and act — you can’t just focus on one. I think [SIX!] is going to be so sick!”
