Former Northwood Charger Drake Powell has been making quite the impression at UNC during his freshman season. Powell is averaging seven points and three rebounds a game as a freshman.Powell took A tough loss against Duke, but Powell was one of the top performers, scoring 12 points for the Tar Heels. Powell’s season high is 18 points against MSU (Michigan st), which the Tarheels ended up losing in overtime.

Sports Illustrated refers to Powell as a “key piece to the UNC basketball rotation” and says at times he fully displays his full potential. A few UNC journalists and college analysts have said they think it’s the best for Powell to return for his sophomore season, giving him more time to develop.

“His defense is still phenomenal and is what will eventually get him drafted in the NBA,” said Ethan Poulus, assistant basketball coach for Northwood High School. He also says Powell has improved a lot this season.

Powell is currently listed on multiple NBA mock drafts, meaning if he decides to declare for the draft, people could potentially see the former Charger in the NBA.

“He gave us a huge lift at the beginning of the game,” UNC head coach Hubert Davis said after UNC’s game against Southern Methodist University. Powell ended up scoring a total of 17 points that night leading to a victory for the Tar Heels.
